Ramset RA27 Buyers GuideThe
Ramset RA27 is a .27 caliber powder actuate tool that has a few features that make it a nice addition to your fleet. The tool uses standard .27 caliber loads that are readily available. The power adjustment feature is nice as you can precisely dial in the power you want for your application. Typically when you down power your tool, it will tend to run a little dirtier but the RA27 is super easy to clean.
Capacity Of The Ramset RA27 Tool
The RA27 will fire
standard pins from ½” up to 1-1/2” in length. I can handle up to a 2” pin if it has a washer on it. This isn’t a tool for framing with 2x material. Think it more of a commercial tool for use with metal track to concrete and steel. It also works well with
ceiling clips, EMT clips and rod hanging clips, so it is somewhat versatile. If you do a fair amount of metal track or z strip, you can purchase a magazine that will hold up to 30 pins. Collated pins for the tool are available in lengths up to 1-1/4”.
Cleaning And Repair Of The RA27
For the most part, your service of the tool will be cleaning. The tool is easy to service in the field. As with any powder actuated tool, cleaning the tool regularly keeps it in good order and is just easier to clean than an abused tool. If you use a lubricant like Tri-Flow or WD-40 make sure you wipe the tool dry to prevent build up of powder. It’s good to have an extra piston on hand for the tool. We sell them with the buffer here. The piston is the most common wear part on the tool so it’s well worth having one on hand to save down time.
Overhead Work With The Ramset RA27
There are a couple of options for the RA27 to mount to a pole for overhead work like suspending grid wire or rod hangers. We offer a fixed 6’ fiberglass pole or you can utilize the
RA27 CUP along with the V4-6 pole commonly used with the Ramset Viper tool. With the CUP system you start with a 6’ base and then you can add 3’ lengths to get up as high as you need. It’s a super stable easy way to get to those higher decks.
Who The Ramset RA27 Is For
The RA27 is really geared towards heavy commercial use in the trades. The fact that it only shoots pins in lengths up to 2 inches with a washer limits it just bit. This tool won’t shoot a long enough pin to fasten 2x material to concrete. Commercial drywall contractors will find it a good choice. The fact that it can easily be used on a pole tool makes it a nice choice for electricians who shoot up support wires for lights and other applications while still being able to shoot boxes. Similarly data comm and limited voltage contractors will find it useful for suspended cable runs and shooting j hooks and more to the wall. Being able to suspend grid wire and all thread from the floor is a very nice option to have.
